Rosacea Facts and Symptoms

Facts and Symptoms

There are physical symptoms that come along with Rosacea that cause psychological consequences. The social and emotional effects are so extensive that some say they are worse than the actual physical symptoms. Individuals suffer from low self-confidence and low self-esteem. 41% of individuals with Rosacea have said that they have avoided public contact all together.

The symptoms of Rosacea that cause these psychological effects have already been mentioned, but they are much more extensive than that. The signs and symptoms can vary from person to person. There may be a flushing of the face and neck, dry skin on the face, pimples that show up as the condition progresses, red lines that appear during flushing, bumps on the nose, and facial burning and stinging may also be an issue. All of these are very uncomfortable conditions and cause individuals to not want to show their faces in public. Many people feel like they are walking billboards for Rosacea.

There are certain triggers to be aware of. Rosacea can flare after doing something as simple as drinking a glass of wine or spending time outdoors on a day that is bitterly cold. It is important to know, however, that what triggers Rosacea in one person may not trigger it in another.

For instance:

• It is important to stay cool when in the kitchen. It can be difficult to stay cool when cooking, but it is possible through the use of fans and air conditioning that you can keep things cooled down.

• Make sure you use sunscreen when in the sun, since heat is a prime trigger for Rosacea.

• When you want to stay fit, you need to exercise in areas that are cool. Taking breaks every 15 minutes can also minimize flare ups.

• Keep a journal of what foods cause flare ups and make sure you avoid those foods. Eating a healthy diet can be a great way to prevent these flare ups.

• Staying away from alcohol can also minimize triggers.

• Use techniques, such as yoga and stress busting methods to reduce stress. Stress has also been linked to Rosacea flare ups.

• Don’t clean your house when it is hot and humid. Wait until it cools down. Always pace yourself so that you don’t overheat. If you start to overheat, move to a cooler area and drink cold water to cool down.

Following these steps can help individuals live their lives as normal as possible, although a lot of precautions have to be taken, especially in certain weather and environmental conditions. Over time, it is possible to get used to these changes.
