Sun Protection Tips

(How can we totally protect our skin from sun exposure, or minimize skin damage from sun?

The sun is dangerous and without protection as all skin types are susceptible to its harmful rays. The best way to provide maximum sun protection is to develop a routine when going outside. Individuals should start by checking the UV index. A high index means that there should be increased protection. When going outside, individuals should get in the habit of applying sunscreen everyday and reapplying it as often as necessary. They should avoid the peak strength of the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. -3p.m and try to stay in the shade. In particular, children should limit their sun exposure since it is estimated that 80% of sun damage takes place during the first 18 years. Sunscreen should contain an SPF of 15 blocks 95% of UVB radiation, while an SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB and should be used by all skin types, especially with sensitive or type 1 – 3 skin types. All SPF’s should be reapplied every two hours, especially when partaking in exercise when sunscreen can rub off. The sun also reacts to certain medications, so those who use them should increase their use of sunscreen or avoid the sun.

Protection against the sun isn’t always found in a bottle. The areas such as the eyes, lips and hair are also exposed to the sun where individuals should use lip balms, conditioners, moisturizers, and makeup with SPF 15 and zinc, a natural protectant against the sun. Additionally, individuals should use UV protective clothing, swimsuits, and wide-brimmed hats with UPF50+ that can block over 97.5% of the sun’s UV radiation. Also, regular clothing such as tightly woven fabrics and dark colors are effective in blocking the suns as well as dry clothing. Sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection are also essential, which can filter at least 80% of sunlight. Sunglasses that wraparound the face is advisable so that individuals not only protect their eyes but the surrounding skin. They are also advisable over are mirrored sunglasses that can intensify the sun’s rays and damage the eyes.
