The first thing you need to do in order to cleanse your face perfectly is to select the right cleanser for your type of skin. Once you find the right product make a point of sticking with it. The contents of an effective cleanser include surfactants, water, and oil; all these have specific functions in taking off makeup remnants and dirt, dissolving facial oils, and rinsing off. The amount of these ingredients is what determines the best cleanser for you. A poor choice can result in either pore clogging or dry skin depending on the amounts used. Bar soap is a big no-no for cleansing the skin simply because it tends to dry up the skin. The unspoken rule for among all people who know to keep their skin superb is that soap is meant to be used from the neck down.

To go about the cleansing process correctly you should start off by splashing warm water on your face. By doing this you are basically unclogging the pores and loosening the dirt. Proceed to wash the face with just a small amount of cleanser. This should be well rinsed off with lukewarm water. A proper makeup remover can be used to take off the remaining makeup.

There is an alternative method of cleansing that involves using creamy cleansers that you just have to wipe off the skin without using water. This method can’t however be compared to the effectiveness of using water. Cleansing is not to be done too often. When you rise in the morning some warm will be sufficient. The cleanser can then be used at night before you sleep. It is important to note that cold or hot water must never be used to wash the skin because both tend to break skin capillaries.

Skin exfoliating is a tried and proven means of getting the skin rejuvenated and fresh. The basic principle of this skin care activity involves getting rid of the top layer of skin which is mainly composed of lifeless epidermis cells. By exfoliating you will not only better your complexion but you will also be less wrinkly and rough looking. Though most people assume that a simple washing of the face is adequate the truth is that exfoliating exposes the young fresh cells covered by the older dead cells. This results in skin that is both radiant and rejuvenated.
One of the most effective ways of exfoliating that you can adopt simply involves the use of a facial scrub once weekly. If you are thick-skinned you can exfoliate twice weekly but care is of the essence since an excess of exfoliating has been the cause of irritation and uneven pigmentation in many people. Facial scrubs have granules as part of their ingredients and persons whose faces produce pus pimples need to be wary of irritation courtesy of the granules as this can spur infection. Exfoliation can also be done by means of a face mask that is usually peeled off. Again, this is to be done once weekly.
To exfoliate correctly, your skin needs to be fully wetted – this is of course after you have thoroughly cleansed the face. A sizeable blob of exfoliating scrub should then be gently rubbed on the face using circular motions for a minute or so. Proceed to rinse off the scrub completely. After this you then have to moisturize with a suitable preparation that contains either BHA or AHA as per your type of skin. Remember to avoid the eyes and surrounding skin and it is best to use the cream during evening hours.

People with great skin that is perpetually glowing, smooth and soft have obviously mastered the art of proper skin moisturizing. Our skins need to be well supplied with proper nutrients and hydration so as to sustain suppleness. A good moisturizer is therefore a necessity. Whenever the skin is feeling tense and taut you should apply some but this mustn’t be overdone for fear of pore clogging. A moisturizer is mandatory for all weather types – even in winter the skin tends to dry up. Your choice of moisturizer should not contain mineral oils as these tend to diminish the skin elasticity.
Apply the moisturizer only after you have cleansed and toned. Persons with oily skin or those who prefer to wear makeup are advised to apply moisturizers that have oil in water formulation as these are lighter. They are therefore best for daytime use. For dehydrated skin a richer moisturizer should be used instead. People with combination skin should use moisturizers with hydrating formulas. Only a light layer of moisturizer is required on the skin and the eye area should be avoided by all means to preempt puffiness.
Moisturizing cream should be applied twice on a daily basis so as to keep the skin healthy, hydrated, and supple. This applies for both winter and fall. Women who are into menopause need to appreciate that their reduced estrogen production also implies a reduced sebum production; this is the precursor to dry skin. A good moisturizer should help you out. The application of moisturizer prior to both foundation and makeup is significantly effective. Foundation tends to spread and blend easier when done over moisturizer and the makeup applied will also last longer. Taking off the makeup at the end of the day is also going to be a more pleasant experience if you had used moisturizer in the first place.

Winter Versus Summer Skin Care (What should we do different for the different seasons?)

Your skin is technically the largest organ in your body and as such, you should always know the proper way to take care of your skin. In order to have healthy skin, it is important to take care of it in a different way for the differing seasons. In summer, you should use a different skin care regimen than you do in winter, for example. This article will give you a few tips on how to care for your skin properly in both summer and winter.

The winter months are usually cold and dry and thus, your skin can become dry and chapped. This can be annoying and even painful. Be sure to moisturize your skin adequately in the winter. Take shorter showers and baths with warmer water. Exfoliate regularly and do not use toner on your skin every day. Most importantly, do not stop using sunscreen in the winter. Just because it is cold outside, that does not mean that your skin is not susceptible to harmful UV rays.

In the summer, you will have different issues to contend with. It will probably be warmer and the humidity increases the amount that the body sweats. When you sweat, your skin becomes oily and you may have more pimples. Use a cleaner to combat these pimples and moisturize less. Deep clean your pores with a toner to help avoid more acne breakouts. Also, be sure to rinse your body with clean water after you swim in a chlorinated pool or the ocean, to remove salt and chemicals from your skin- these can also act as irritants. Finally, always use a sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher throughout the summer- that is the best thing you can do to protect your skin from harm.

(How can we totally protect our skin from sun exposure, or minimize skin damage from sun?

The sun is dangerous and without protection as all skin types are susceptible to its harmful rays. The best way to provide maximum sun protection is to develop a routine when going outside. Individuals should start by checking the UV index. A high index means that there should be increased protection. When going outside, individuals should get in the habit of applying sunscreen everyday and reapplying it as often as necessary. They should avoid the peak strength of the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. -3p.m and try to stay in the shade. In particular, children should limit their sun exposure since it is estimated that 80% of sun damage takes place during the first 18 years. Sunscreen should contain an SPF of 15 blocks 95% of UVB radiation, while an SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB and should be used by all skin types, especially with sensitive or type 1 – 3 skin types. All SPF’s should be reapplied every two hours, especially when partaking in exercise when sunscreen can rub off. The sun also reacts to certain medications, so those who use them should increase their use of sunscreen or avoid the sun.

Protection against the sun isn’t always found in a bottle. The areas such as the eyes, lips and hair are also exposed to the sun where individuals should use lip balms, conditioners, moisturizers, and makeup with SPF 15 and zinc, a natural protectant against the sun. Additionally, individuals should use UV protective clothing, swimsuits, and wide-brimmed hats with UPF50+ that can block over 97.5% of the sun’s UV radiation. Also, regular clothing such as tightly woven fabrics and dark colors are effective in blocking the suns as well as dry clothing. Sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection are also essential, which can filter at least 80% of sunlight. Sunglasses that wraparound the face is advisable so that individuals not only protect their eyes but the surrounding skin. They are also advisable over are mirrored sunglasses that can intensify the sun’s rays and damage the eyes.

A person with oily skin will more often than not exhibit pimples, blackheads, and coarse pores courtesy of the hyperactive sebaceous glands that produce more than required amounts of oil. With the excess oils, the skin will always seem to be greasy and shiny. The skin pores will also be more prominent. The main reasons behind the development of this skin type include factors like diet, humid hot weather, hormone levels, birth control medication, pregnancy, and the choice of cosmetics. Oily skin is more prevalent in the teenage years due to hormonal activity but the condition can extend into the latter years. The skin generally tends to become drier with advance in years.
To care for dry skin, soap and mildly hot water should be used and this is mainly to free up the pores. Excessively harsh soaps are not right since they will initiate skin flaking. The skin reacts to this situation by having the oil glands produce increased oil amounts – this condition is referred to as reactive seborrhea. Your cleansing effort should include oil-based preparations so that the sebum is effectively dissolved. The moisturizer you use after this should then contain minimal oils so that the complexion is not shiny. Wash your face 2 times daily or 3 times at the most.
The right diet for an oily skinned person should offer much proteins but limited sugars and salt. Leafy vegetables and fresh fruit is a must. A deficiency of vitamin B2 and B5 has been credited with the rise of oily skin. You should therefore eat lots of foods like beans, nuts, whole grains, royal jelly, and whole rice. Take in limited amounts of fat especially the excessively fried and seasoned foods. Ensure that your water intake is adequate as you need to get rid of toxins. Drink water and not alcohol or soft drinks

Of all the skin types, combination skin is largely the most dominant. The skin tends to become oily when in some locations and dry when in others. Combination skin can also be an indication that you are suffering from variations of seborrhea which basically means that the skin is overproducing oil on the face and scalp.

Persons with combination skin have a dedicated skin portion that is most affected by increased oil production. This region is known as the T-zone and it spreads across the forehead, along the line of the nose, and in the chin area. This skin zones have a higher concentration of oil glands and as such they will frequently be spotted with various skin blemishes. The other parts of the face will tend to be dry and will sometimes flake because of limited lubrication.

The presence of the T-zone and the dry zone will definitely mean that such skin has to be taken care of with a combination of products. The right products for the T-zone will be those that facilitate oil absorption. You can also make use of oil-blotting paper to increase the absorption of the excess oils. For the rest if the skin you will then have to use products that cater for either normal or dry skin. In case of flakiness then you will have to use dry skin preparations. Wash the face with a cleanser that is water soluble and then rinse this off with warm water. A BHA product is recommended for exfoliation while the application of sunscreen is vital. The dry patches of your skin should be treated with an antioxidant-rich moisturizer.

Eat from a balanced diet to ensure you supply the skin with all the proper nutrients in balanced proportions. Eat lots of fruits and fresh vegetables to get antioxidant supplies. Drinking water in well spread out intervals across the day will keep you superbly hydrated.

Sun Protection Factor (What is SPF? Should we trust the SPF scoring system?)

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, which indicates to consumers the length of time that they can be in the sun without burning from UVB rays.

SPF numbers are an equation that factors in the time that it normally takes an individual to burn in the sun without protection. As a general rule, the number is determined by factoring in the time that an individual will turn red from the sun. So, if a person turns red after 10 minutes they should be able to use SPF15 for 150 minutes without burning. This is 15 times longer than if sunscreen wasn’t used. As the value of SPF increases, the protection against sunburn increases.

SPF is the generally guideline used in the United States but it has limitations. Since skin types vary with affects of the sun, product results will vary and differ based on an individuals skin type. In general, individuals with fair and sensitive skin will be most likely to absorb more UVB rays than individuals with dark skin. The effectiveness of SPF’s are also depends on the amount of applications, activities that can cause sunscreen to wear or rub off, and the amount of sunscreen the skin has absorbed. SPF is also generally regarded as a flawed measurement since it is a general guideline to the amount of sunburn protection provided by sunscreens and does not inform consumers of the time allotted in the sun without getting burnt. Additionally, SPF doesn’t measure how much protection is needed against the sun’s powerful UVA rays. This means that there is no sunscreen that gives total protection. In order to ensure that individuals are protected against UVA as well as UVB rays, a sunscreen should contain avobenzone, titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide. These ingredients in combination with other elements in a sunscreen are called broad-spectrum sunscreens, which protect against both UVB and UVA rays.
