Determining Your Skin Type

In order to properly take care of your skin, you must be aware of the type of skin that you have. Knowing your skin type is of the utmost importance before beginning a skin care regime or beginning making changes to your current one. There are five general categories of skin types: normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive. Each of these different types of skin requires a different selection of products, in addition to requiring different amounts of application. The easiest way to determine your skin type is by doing a blot test. In the morning, blot your face with a clean tissue. The results that you get should match one of the skin types mentioned below.

Normal Skin
If your blot test reveals no oil at all, then your skin is most likely normal. A normal skin type usually is a sign of healthy skin and causes the least amount of issues.

Dry Skin
If your blot test reveals no oil, but leaves behind tight, flaky skin, then your skin type is most likely dry. Dry skin can cause premature wrinkling and is prone to blemishes.

Oily Skin
If your blot test reveals oily deposits, you most likely have an oily skin type. General areas of oil build up are on the cheeks, forehead, and nose. Oily skin is often prone to acne and can appear glossy or wet.

Combination Skin
If your blot test was clean on all areas except for your nose and forehead, then you most likely have combination skin. This oily zone, sometimes referred to as the ‘T Zone,’ will need to be treated differently than the dry or normal skin that surrounds it.

Sensitive Skin
If your skin is easily irritated or is prone to rashes and other reddening of the skin, then you may have sensitive skin. Sensitive skin is by far the most fragile type of skin, and it often requires treatment by a specialist.

Now that you have a good idea which type of skin you have, be sure to consult a professional for advice on the most effective skin care regime. By taking care of your skin in the best possible way, you will increase the chances of maintaining a youthful, healthy face.
